Abstract
The authors present this report reparding the result of an echocardiographic study, the first of its kind in this country, of out and inpatients of cardiovascular diseases treaded at St. Mary¢¥s Hospital of Catholic Medical College during the period of approximately 20 months from March 1969 to Nevember 1970.
In this study physicians and nurses working at St. Mary¢¥s Hospital and ¢¥students of Catholic medical College were used as the control group.
1) A normal wave pattern of the mitral valve could be recorded in all 20 subjects (10 males and, 10 females).
2) The normal slope value in Koreans was found, to be 80-150mm/sec, and any slope value of less than 50mm/sec, could be determined as mitral stenosis.
3) In the group of patientsof cardiovascular diseases, except in cases of pulmonary emehysema, extreme obesity, heart failure, and pulmonary. edema, the recording of the mitral valve was possible in 96 percent of the subject.
4) The authors were able to verify that the theories by Filler and Segal with regard to various wave patterns are generally relevant.
5) In regard to the report by Edler and Segal, the authors were most interested in the following points:
(1) The atrial sound did not coincide with point "A", but fell on a different point which was tentatively named "A2" by the authors.
(2) Although Edler and Segal reported ¢¥that point "A" did not appear in cases accompaine by atrial fibrillation, it ¢¥was revealed by the authors¢¥ study that point "A" was infallibly¢¥ found in all the cases not accompanied by mitral stenosis. Disappearance of point "A" occurred only, in cases,: with mitral stenosis.
6) Of all noninvasive methed, U.C.G. was considered most effective in the diagnosis of mitral stenosis. It was also thought to be a very useful method for the diagnosis of disorders in perici.rdial fluid.
7) In cases of rheumatic fever with l¡ÆA-V block, the amplitude-of point "A" ,increased, and in all cases with pulses less than 90 /mm, point¢¥ A2 was found which coincided with S4. It is addaitte a dly-attributable to ¢¥cardiomyopathy caused ¢¥by¢¥ rheu matic carditis. ¢¥
